Tearful Hilary Duff Details "Lonely" Estrangement From Sister Haylie Duff
Hilary Duff remembers a time she was perhaps slightly less than mature.
While discussing her relationship with husband of six years Matthew Koma, the “So Yesterday” singer revealed the couple rarely fight, except for “one drag-out fight” they have once a year.
“He actually brought it up the other day,” Hilary shared with friend Dakota Fanning during a conversation for Interview Magazine published Feb. 23. “He was like, ‘We haven’t had a fight in such a long time.’ I’m like, ‘Are you ready?’"
However, the 38-year-old ultimately admitted she was the one who wasn’t ready for it, sharing the last time they had their big fight she “threw his phone in a Bougainvillea bush,” adding, “It felt so good.”
But as Hilary explained, the fight happened during a particularly difficult time for the couple and their kids—daughters Banks, 7, Mae, 4, and Townes, 21 months, as well as son Luca, 13, who Hilary shares with ex-husband Mike Comrie—after they were displaced from their home during the 2025 Los Angeles fires.
“We just needed to have it out,” she said. “But we don’t usually fight.”
In fact, the couple proved just how well they work together in their personal life and their professional life when Matthew came on board as the producer for her latest album, Luck… or Something. And for Hilary, “having that guy in my corner” gave her a sense of comfort.
“It sounds so cheesy to say, but waking up every day and taking on the things in our world—we’re such a unit,” she shared. “Growing up in the industry, I felt like a lone rider for such a long time.”

“That’s such a dorky word,” Hilary continued, “but I was like, ‘I’m tough. I’ve got this.’ It took me a really long time to accept how much he could take off of my plate.”
Plus, it helped that Matthew is “insanely talented,” which made Hilary decide that she wanted to work with only him and no one else.
“I was like, ‘It has to just be me and you,’” she explained. “The most honest stuff came from that because he has a front row to my life and everything I’ve experienced—the really difficult times and the really easy good times that made me who I am.”
