With the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, Jay-Z has been at the center of the hip-hop world in 2026. And now, after an epic trio of Yankee Stadium concerts in New York this summer, and reignited beef with Colin Kaepernick, the 56-year-old rapper has a new documentary series about his life and art throughout his career in music.

Directed by Rick Rubin, JAŸ-Z In 8 is available to watch on HBO, or stream on demand on HBO Max starting Friday (Sept. 18)

When Does ‘JAŸ-Z In 8’ Start?

The two-episode series premiere airs starting on Friday (Sept. 18), with a start time of 8 p.m. ET/PT. Afterward, two new episodes of JAŸ-Z In 8 drop every Friday until Oct. 9. There are eight episodes in total.

A subscription to HBO Max is the best way to watch JAŸ-Z In 8 online. The streaming service starts at $10.99 per month for the ad-supported plan. But you can get HBO Max bundled with Hulu and Disney+ starting at $19.99 per month for all three services.

Unfortunately, HBO Max doesn’t offer a free trial, but there’s a clever workaround. A subscription to DirecTV’s “Premier” plan gets you access to live TV, local and cable channels, including HBO Max to watch JAŸ-Z In 8 when it airs. Plans start at $139.99 for the first month of service ($169.99 per month afterward), while the streaming platform offers a five-day free trial to watch for free.
