Heisman Watch: Sporting News voters update list, look ahead to Week 4

Heisman Trophy voters Cliff Brunt and Jeff Hauser cover college football for The Sporting News. Hauser has voted since 2015 and Brunt since 2017. They have compiled an alphabetical watch list of players they would consider strongly for their top three if ballots were due today. The highlighted players are in the top five for one or both.

Bear Bachmeier, QB, BYU

Season stats: Three games, 71% completions, 642 yards, six TDs; 12 carries, 64 yards, two TDs.

Last game: Completed 12 of 16 passes for 227 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Led the Cougars to a 41-23 win over Colorado State.

Next game: The Cougars have a bye before visiting TCU on Oct. 3.

Trinidad Chambliss, QB, Ole Miss

Season stats: Three games, 70% completions, 924 yards, seven TDs; 21 carries, 64 yards, 2 TDs.

Last game: Chambliss led Ole Miss to an emotional win over LSU and former Rebels coach Lane Kiffin. He completed 33 of 48 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns and ran for the winning touchdown -- a 14-yard carry -- in the fourth quarter.

Next game: The Rebels visit Florida on Saturday. Chambliss’ success early this season presents a bigger stage for explosive Florida running back Jadan Baugh, who has rushed for 458 yards and eight touchdowns in three games.

Josh Hoover, QB, Indiana

Season stats: Three games, 72.5% completions, 649 yards, 51 passes without an interception. Passer rating of 243.9, 10 TD passes and just 14 incompletions.

Last game: Completed 18 of 24 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-0 win over Western Kentucky.

Next game: Indiana hosts Northwestern on Friday.

Arch Manning, QB, Texas

Season stats: Three games, 61.9% completions, 664 yards, seven touchdowns; 20 carries, 80 yards.

Last game: Completed 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards with two touchdowns.

Next game: Manning visits uncle Peyton’s school when the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25 opens Southeastern Conference play at Tennessee.

Darian Mensah, QB, Miami

Season stats: Three games, 89.9% completions, 873 yards, 11 TDs without an interception. Passer rating of 229.1.

Last game: Completed his first 24 passes in a 33-20 win over Wake Forest last Friday. Overall, he connected on 30 of 34 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

Next game: Miami hosts Central Michigan on Saturday night.

Jeremiah Smith, WR, Ohio State

Season stats: Three games, 21 catches, 400 yards, three TDs.

Last game: Five catches, 85 yards in a 59-3 win over Kent State. He became the school’s all-time leader in yards receiving.

Next game: The Buckeyes host Illinois on Saturday.

Malachi Toney, WR, Miami

Season stats: Three games, 28 catches, 444 yards, five TDs.

Last game: Caught 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdowns against Wake Forest.

Next game: The Hurricanes host Central Michigan on Saturday night.
