It's unfortunate that the San Antonio Spurs’ eye-opening 2025-26 campaign ended the way it did.
For a minute, it looked like San Antonio, which lost their first two NBA Finals contests vs. the New York Knicks before winning Game 3, was prepared to steal its second road game and even up the series at two games apiece.
Embarrassingly, the Spurs squandered a colossal 29-point lead and found themselves in a frightening 3-1 hole they couldn't overcome.
De’Aaron Fox’s performance in the series felt like one long, never-ending nightmare, as he committed horrendous live-ball turnovers, proved to be unreliable as a scorer when the stakes were at their highest, and played arguably the biggest role in the Knicks inability to close the Knicks out in Game 4.
On the bright side for the Spurs, CBS Sports named the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Chicago Bulls, and Brooklyn Nets as top landing spots for the disappointing 28-year-old veteran if the Spurs want to move off his astronomical $229 million contract this summer.
“Plenty of teams should be interested (in Fox) Miami if it misses on Giannis,” Botkin wrote Friday. “The Wolves, as we'll get to, need a point guard and co-star for (Anthony) Edwards. The Bulls or Nets could just absorb Fox into their cap space and send the Spurs draft capital.”
The Bulls would arguably be the best destination for Fox. After the former first-round pick’s all-time meltdown, it would do him some good to disappear from the win-now scene and join a Bulls franchise with expectations that are far from lofty.
Fox could quickly regain his confidence and play stress-free basketball all season long. After all, the Kentucky product has been at his best when playing with a non-contender, as he established himself as a dynamic, do-it-all star with a Kings squad that only reached the postseason once during his 7.5-year stint in Sacramento.
To put it simply, getting traded to Chicago would be a positive development for Fox.
