Heat's Giannis Antetokounmpo predicted as biggest game changer, not Jaylen Brown or LaMelo Ball

This is why pundits begged to ask the question: which superstar will make the biggest impact with their new team? There are arguments for Jaylen Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers, or even LaMelo Ball with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

ESPN's answer? It was none other than Giannis Antetokounmpo landing with a competitive Miami Heat roster alongside Coach Erik Spoelstra, Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins.

Heat's Antetokounmpo projected to be biggest NBA game changer

The NBA started to look like a video game simulation when the offseason kicked off. A whole lot of stars rode the wave of parity to join new teams. This is why the 2025-26 NBA standings will be unrecognizable when the upcoming season ends. Some squads at the top of the ladder will fall while others rapidly rise.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of the earliest people to get traded during the offseason. The Heat won the bidding war against the Boston Celtics. So it's not hard to see why he will have a big impact. However, ESPN's Summer Forecast shows a large vote disparity that sets him apart from guys like Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James, and Jaylen Brown.

It's easy to see why Antetokounmpo has such a large gap in predicted contributions compared with the other players. He will still be 31 years old at the start of the 2026-27 NBA season, well within his prime. Moreover, he is just two years removed from being an All-NBA First Team selection, placing eighth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting, and finishing third in the NBA Most Valuable Player race.

In relation to the Heat, the uptick in the squad's performance is expected to be quite huge. With Antetokounmpo in tow, ESPN projects they will finish with a 47-win record, which is good enough for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. This is a three-seed jump from their 2025-26 finish, which only got the Heat the 10th seed.

Antetokounmpo is also expected to produce more impactful numbers as the Heat are, admittedly, more competitive than his previous Milwaukee Bucks squad. His projected 2026-27 NBA season Per 36 Minutes numbers are below.

The Heat are considered title contenders, or at least Eastern Conference juggernauts, because of Antetokounmpo. Yes, Coach Erik Spoelstra is one of the greatest basketball minds in the game's history. It is also true that Bam Adebayo can carry them by scoring 83 points in a single game, surpassing Kobe Bryant. However, this Heat roster makeup likely wouldn't get as much respect if they hadn't won the sweepstakes against the Celtics for the Greek Freak.

Look, the Timberwolves were already reaching heights as far as the Western Conference Finals even without LaMelo Ball. Jaylen Brown and LeBron James do make the 76ers a super team in all definitions of the word, but it's not like they were a bottom-of-the-barrel squad in the year prior. Antetokounmpo adds veteran leadership, championship experience, and DPOY chops that help the other Heat players, and he forces opponents to collapse on him when he runs the offense. This is precisely why the Heat will only go as far as where Antetokounmpo takes them.
