The Miami Heat are an intriguing team to monitor as the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaches. The team is beginning to hit its stride, which makes it likely that some moves could come to fruition. However, everything hinges on whether the Heat are willing to go all-in for Ja Morant.
“Are the Miami Heat willing to take a risk on Ja Morant, even if it comes at the expense of having one less trade asset to use in the event that Giannis Antetokounmpo hits the trade block during the offseason? This is the one burning question that will largely dictate how the Heat operates at the deadline,” AUCH’s Michael Saenz wrote.
Just a year ago, it seemed unfathomable that Morant would ever leave Memphis. Now, the organization has begun listening to offers for the star guard.
“The Memphis Grizzlies are entertaining offers to potentially move two-time All-Star Ja Morant ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, sources told ESPN. Multiple teams are pursuing Morant in trade talks, and rival executives believe the Grizzlies would prioritize draft picks and young players in return, sources said,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.
NBA reporter Evan Sidery believes the Heat could attempt to land Morant by offering Terry Rozier and additional players.
“The Heat are operating as if Terry Rozier’s $26.6 million expiring contract is allowed to be used in a trade. Miami is interested in Ja Morant, and they’re willing to offer the salaries of Rozier and Simone Fontecchio. However, Miami appears hesitant to offer any draft capital,” Sidery wrote.
The key takeaway in these talks is draft compensation. Unless the Grizzlies are blown away by the players included in a potential deal, it is difficult to see Memphis accepting an offer without first-round picks.
The Heat are in a position to turn their season around and push toward a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference. Adding a player of Morant’s caliber would certainly accelerate that climb, but ultimately, it comes down to how far Miami is willing to go to get a deal done.
