Heat reportedly eyeing Klay Thompson if Mavericks make one big move

Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson's future with the franchise remains uncertain. While he is still under contract, reports suggest the Miami Heat and several other teams would have significant interest in pursuing the veteran sharpshooter if he were to become an unrestricted free agent.

NBA insider Marc Stein recently addressed the speculation surrounding Thompson and Miami's reported interest. Stein explained that the current discussions are centered around a potential buyout rather than an immediate trade.

“The Mavericks at this point have operated as they are trying to find a trade for Klay Thompson. All scenarios about Miami’s interest. Those are buyout scenarios. As we stand mid July, I don’t think the Mavs are giving consideration to a buyout,” Stein said.

“If no trade materializes and it’s August/September, and no trade has materialized, does the possibility change? Will Klay’s representatives push for a buyout? I’m sure that’s on the menu of possibilities.”

During Bleacher Report's livestream, NBA insider Jake Fischer also noted that Miami would have legitimate interest in Thompson should he negotiate a buyout with the Mavericks. However, Fischer added there is currently no indication that Dallas is preparing to buy out the four-time NBA champion.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are entering a new era built around rookie Cooper Flagg. As the franchise balances its veteran talent with a younger core, the front office appears open to exploring Thompson's trade market.

The five-time All-Star is entering the final season of his three-year, $50 million contract. He is set to earn $17.4 million during the 2026-27 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

For now, Dallas is expected to explore potential trade opportunities involving Thompson's expiring contract before seriously considering a buyout. If a buyout were eventually reached, Thompson would likely need to forfeit a portion of his remaining salary in exchange for unrestricted free agency, allowing him to sign with the team of his choice.
