The Miami Heat have done a nice job assembling their roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. The team also brought four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson into the mix after he agreed to a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.
This has been one of Miami’s best summers in a long time, but the team still has one roster spot to fill. It was previously believed that Gabe Vincent could be the final addition, but that no longer appears to be the case.
“I do think the former Heat guard Gabe Vincent has some fans in this building and some fans on that roster who would love for him to be back into the fold, right now it's looking like Miami is not a outcome for Gabe Vincent. But I do think Miami's roster isn't exactly done and the guard position will be something they look at moving forward," Fischer said.
The Heat could instead take a chance on a young player looking to rebuild his value and prove he still belongs in the NBA. Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar believes Miami should take a look at Cam Whitmore.
“With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo leading the charge inside, the Heat need more ball-handlers and scorers who can do damage on the perimeter. The Heat signed Klay Thompson to provide that, but why not add more bench pieces? Whitmore has shown that he can score, but he has sometimes looked like a player trying to prove he belongs every time he touches the basketball. Miami could slow the game down for him mentally. Learn the ropes from Giannis and Bam, and excel in your role,” Bitar wrote.
Whitmore was involved in the trade that sent Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was waived almost immediately afterward.
“The Cleveland Cavaliers have waived Cam Whitmore, league sources told hoopshype. Whitmore, the 20th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, has averaged 10.5 points on 45% from the field and 35% from 3-point range in 17.3 minutes during three NBA seasons with the Rockets and Wizards," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto wrote.
For the Heat, this would be a low-risk move. Whitmore would have an opportunity to sign a smaller deal, prove himself and potentially rebuild his value around a talented roster. With his NBA future at stake, Miami could be getting a highly motivated player with something to prove.
Whitmore was originally on a $15 million rookie contract, but that is no longer the situation. Playing alongside Antetokounmpo and Adebayo could give him a much better environment to develop.
Miami has built a talented roster, and adding an explosive former first-round pick like Whitmore could give the Heat another scoring option off the bench. With his career at a crossroads, this could be exactly the opportunity he needs.
