The NBA world is still awaiting a decision from LeBron James, as free agency has been underway for three weeks. James spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, but that chapter has come to an end.

James is the biggest free agent on the market, putting much of the league on hold as teams wait for his decision. This marks the fifth time in his career that he has entered free agency.

“For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is available in free agency. James informed the Los Angeles Lakers last month that he intends to play his 24th NBA season elsewhere, ending his eight-year run with the franchise. The 41-year-old is now an unrestricted free agent, coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting. In other words: James can still help a team, which is exactly what he intends to do,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Bobby Marks wrote.

James appears to be nearing a decision and reportedly has five teams to choose from.

“It’s decision time for LeBron James… The Leading suitors have been CLE, MIA, GSW, PHI, and MIN…. LeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere he can compete for a championship. Somewhere he feels he finds that happiness from a team environment and culture that he can uplift,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said.

While five teams remain in the mix for James, there is a growing consensus that he has narrowed his focus to three favorites.

“LeBron James is zeroing in on the Cavaliers, Heat and Sixers as his top choices in free agency, per Shams Charania. The Timberwolves and Warriors are still in it, but they’re currently viewed behind those three Eastern Conference teams,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.

James is looking to join a team he believes gives him the best opportunity to compete for another championship. All three Eastern Conference contenders feature star talent, but the 76ers may have the most intriguing roster after adding Jaylen Brown.

James played last season on a $101 million contract, but he is expected to sign for significantly less this summer. His decision remains up in the air, but with each passing day, it appears increasingly possible that he could return to the Eastern Conference for the final chapter of his career.
