US Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy praised Greg Biffle as a 'true patriot' for his recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene. Duffy listed out Biffle's contribution and lauded his 'heart of gold' and 'commitment to service'.
Biffle and his family of four died in a fatal plane crash on Thursday morning, December 18. A mechanical issue caused a quick turnaround and a failed landing, with a confirmed death toll of seven, including figures like Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.
After Hurricane Helene, Biffle extended his help to rescue stranded people and provide emergency aid long after the storm had ended. He employed his own helicopter to personally help with the cleanup. Consequently, the National Motorsports Press Association honoured him with the prestigious Myers Brothers Award for 'extraordinary humanitarian efforts'.
Reflecting upon the same, Duffy shared an X post, writing,
"Greg Biffle wasn't just a NASCAR legend - he was a true patriot who used his platform, wealth, and resources to help people." "When Hurricane Helene devasted communities across Western North Carolina, he jumped into action to save lives and deliver critical supplies. His dedication was an inspiration to @USDOT and everyone involved in the cleanup effort. I even interviewed Biffle last year when I was with Fox Business, and I saw then his heart of gold and commitment to service," he added. On its part, NASCAR issued an official statement mourning the loss of Greg Biffle. The sanctioning body also praised his 'countless hours' of Hurricane relief efforts, calling it a 'tireless work that saved lives'.
Moreover, Biffle was officially named as part of NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers during the sport's 75th anniversary in 2023. The 55-year-old earned his stripes as a Truck Series and O'Reilly Auto Parts Series champion, racking up 56 wins across all three national series.
Greg Biffle rallied efforts to help out storm-hit Jamaica
Greg Biffle recently coordinated plans to perform air and sea relief missions after Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica. He went on the local news channel and organised relief efforts to supply food, water and fuel.
Biffle acknowledged the unfamiliar terrain as a major hindrance, while the storm looked to be two to three times stronger than Hurricane Helene.
"It's giving me goosebumps right now because of all of the people that just poured out last time and were willing to help, and I feel even more helpless now being so far away from the disaster, just now knowing what they need....this is a much bigger operation, figuring out what they need, coordinate with the right people," Biffle said.Just days away from his 56th birthday, Greg Biffle was travelling to spend time with YouTuber and part-time racer Cleetus MacFarland when tragedy hit. The two drivers had raised money through a short head-to-head showdown during the Triple B 100 race weekend.
Biffle defeated MacFarland after a late charge to the lead.
