San Diego Padres ace Yu Darvish hasn't returned to the mound this season, but his son Shoei is capturing attention with the franchise's scout team. Shoei is a young pitcher for the San Diego Padres Scout Team, and he was at the National Program Invitational this week.
During the offseason, Shoei and Yu engage a lot in throwing BP at each other. More than just father and son, the two seemed to have bonded over baseball as friends.
On Sunday, Shoei was interviewed by sports reporter Lexi Bowden. He shared his candid take on his relationship and training with his father.

Shoei grew up watching Yu Darvish, as he reveals when he decided to take baseball professionally
During the same segment of the interview, Shoei spoke about growing up and watching his dad on the MLB mound.
“It was awesome. As a child, not a lot of people get to see that, so seeing your dad throwing high 90s and striking out All-Stars, making an All-Star team — just surreal to see,” Shoei said.Shoei's motivation to take baseball as a professional career was a move motivated by Yu Darvish when he was with the Texas Rangers (2012-2017).
“It was probably when I was seven, seeing my dad with the Rangers, just going to the game every day," Shoei added. "I wanted to do this one day, so probably when I was seven is when I knew I wanted to do this for a living.”The 2025 prospect had a challenging past, suffering elbow injuries during his freshman and sophomore years.
“It definitely ruined my mental health,” he said. “I’m not used to it now, so I’m ready for it. I just want to get better and stay healthy.”Only time will tell if Shoei makes it to the majors and Yu Darvish is there to tap on his back for what he has accomplished.
