Hawks' Trae Young trade rumors get major update with Kristaps Porzingis trade

Trae Young is entering the final, fully guaranteed year of his $215 million contract extension. Rumors are flying that he could be on the move from Atlanta, but a big trade could keep him on the team for years to come.

On Tuesday, the Hawks traded for Celtics' big man Kristaps Porzingis. The Latvian once known as "Unicorn" will be a big body target in the paint and a shooter who can stretch the floor.

It's a win-now move that shows Atlanta is committed, for now, to Young and this current roster featuring promising players like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels.

Porzingis has two years and $60 million remaining on his current contract. He will pair nicely with Young in pick-and-roll action and open alley-oop opportunities for the point guard when he drives into the paint.

When this season ended with Atlanta missing the playoffs, many theorized they could blow up their current core and move in a different direction. But after injuries to Eastern Conference stars Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton, and Damian Lillard, the competition is sparce.

The Hawks young, defensive roster poses a threat in a weaker East and with Porzingis, an NBA champion, in the fold, Atlanta could be a top four team in the conference.

Young is eligible for a contract extension this summer worth up to $229 million. It could be too soon to commit to that number, but this move from the Hawks shows they're ready to build around the quick guard for at least the near future.

If things go according to plan, it could be a resurgence in Atlanta.
