The first two rounds of the 2025 PGA Championship introduced viewers to a host of unheralded names. Few had as much success as Venezuelan star Jhonattan Vegas, who finished Friday's session as the clubhouse leader with 8-under.
Vegas looks well on his way to posting a career-best result at a major tournament. A four-time PGA Tour winner, Vegas has had his fair share of strong showings on the links since turning pro in 2008. Still, it's hard to imagine any coming on a stage as high-profile as the one that has descended upon Quail Hollow in recent days.
With that, here's what you need to know about Vegas' displays in major competitions thus far.

Has Jhonattan Vegas won a major?
Vegas hasn't yet claimed a major title. He hasn't finished all that close to the top of the leaderboard, either — his best showing at a major tourney was tying for 22nd in the 2016 PGA Championship.
Vegas made his first major tournament appearance in 2011, finishing tied for the 51st-best score in the field at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. In the 2016 tourney in fine fettle, posting a 1-over-par 71 through his first two rounds to punch his ticket into Rounds 3 and 4.
After bringing his score to even-par in Round 3, Vegas showed out with a 3-under-par 67 on the final day of competition. While he finished 10 strokes off the lead, he posted better scores than heavyweights Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, and Rory McIlroy, among others.

Vegas has only made it to the weekend four times in major competition since then: the Masters, US Open, and PGA Championship in 2018 and the 2021 US Open. His output in the opening two rounds of the 2025 competition suggests he could reach new heights this time around.
How old is Jhonattan Vegas?
Vegas is 40. The Maturin, Venezuela native turns 41 on Aug. 19. He's been a fixture in the professional game since 2008, although he didn't notch his official PGA Tour card until 2011.
Since graduating to the PGA's top flight, Vegas has captured four wins, the most recent of which came in 2024 at the 3M Open in Minnesota.
