Harmanpreet Kaur created history on Sunday, November 2, becoming the first Indian captain to lift the ICC Women's World Cup. The Women in Blue had made it to the final on two previous occasions (2005 and 2017), but faltered at the final hurdle. On Sunday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, though, Harmanpreet and her girls created history.
Sent into bat after losing yet another toss under overcast conditions, India Women posted a competitive 298-7 on the board in their 50 overs. Shafali Verma top-scored with 87 off 78 balls, while Deepti Sharma hit a run-a-ball 58. The duo starred with the balls well. While Shafali claimed two key wickets, Deepti finished with a five-fer to derail South Africa's chase.
