Hamas claims it has lost contact with Edan Alexander, a New Jersey native and the last living US hostage held captive in the Gaza Strip.
The terror group accused Israel of bombing the location where the dual US-Israeli citizen, 21, was being held, just days after sharing a propaganda video of him.
“We announce that we have lost contact with the team guarding soldier Edan Alexander following a direct Israeli bombardment targeting their location. We are still trying to reach them,” Hudhaifa Kahlout, the spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement, as reported by Al Jazeera.
“It seems that the occupation army is deliberately trying to kill him and hence relieve themselves from the pressure caused by the dual-citizen prisoners in order to continue its genocide against our people,” said Kahlout.
Israel Defense Forces has said it does not carry out strikes in areas where it suspects Hamas is holding hostages.
Every Gaza strike and ground operation is carefully planned out in order not to endanger the hostages, military officials have repeatedly said.
Alexander is a soldier who was stationed near the Gaza Strip on the morning of the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack when he was taken captive by Hamas terrorists.
The terror group has shared two propaganda videos of Alexander since his capture, the latest of which was on Saturday.
In Saturday’s video, Alexander appealed to President Trump to get him out of Gaza, and urged him not to believe what he said were “lies” told by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Last month, Hamas agreed to release Alexander as part of a cease-fire deal with Israel, only to renege on its promise a day later.
Hamas’ Qassam Brigades shared a chilling video directed at the families of the remaining Israeli hostages following the claim it had lost contact with Alexander.
“Be prepared. Soon your children will return in black coffins with their bodies torn apart by shrapnel from your army’s missiles,” the group said in the video, which featured footage of the previous handover of coffins carrying the remains of Israeli captives to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“Your leadership has signed the decision to execute the prisoners in the Gaza Strip,” the group warned.
Netanyahu visited Israeli troops in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, where he vowed that his country’s military offensive on Gaza would continue until all the hostages were freed, according to his office.
“They are striking the enemy, and Hamas will continue to suffer blow after blow. We insist that they release our hostages, and we insist on achieving all of our war objectives,” Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office.
Israel’s government continues to demand that Hamas disarm in exchange for a cease-fire, which would allow for the release of the 24 living hostages believed to remain in Gaza.
