Hailey Bieber Shares How Past Stroke and Heart Surgery Impacted Her

While receiving treatment, doctors also discovered she was born with a “grade five” Patent Foramen Oval, a heart defect that increases the risk of TIA and other strokes, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Hailey underwent heart surgery shortly after, and she noted she was grateful to fix both her conditions in the same week. 

“I’m recovering really well. I feel great,” she recalled in a YouTube video in April, one month after her health scares. “The biggest thing I feel, honestly, is I just feel really relieved that we were able to figure everything out, that we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to just move on from this really scary situation and just live my life.”

True to her words, Hailey started focusing on her career and launched Rhode—which went viral for their pocket blushes and lip balm phone case—two months later. She then sold the brand to e.l.f. Beauty in a $1 million deal last May, a decision she recently admitted made her appreciate being a businesswoman. 

“I have a whole new breath of life with it,” she explained on the Therapuss podcast. “I feel even more motivated and more passionate. And now that we have e.l.f. as a partner, I also feel I have more access to do that, which is exciting.”

And when she’s not getting creative in the lab, she and Justin—who got married in 2018—are witnessing their son hit a major milestone: Learning how to say new words.   

“He says ‘Basketball’ all the time,” she noted. “I went to get him up from his nap today, and he was like, ‘Basketball!’ It’s insane. So funny. He also just started saying ‘Please.’ It’s so cute.”

Hailey continued of her motherhood journey, “I always knew I wanted kids. And then when it happens, you never know what to expect. And honestly? It’s so much fun.”
