Guardians' Nic Enright reaches special personal milestone after comeback from cancer

You can see it in the photograph right above these words. Guardians catcher Bo Naylor was thrilled for his relief pitcher Nic Enright on Monday night.

And for good reason: Enright, after quite the journey, had just earned his first MLB save.

The 28-year old Enright closed out the Mets on the road in a 7-6 win.

It's less than three years since Enright was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma.

He underwent four rounds of immunotherapy this offseason and expects to go through four more after this season.

“I’ve gone through a lot of adversity -- just everything that has gone on,” Enright told MLB.com on Monday night. “I reflect on those moments. I think that helps being able to slow the game down because it hasn’t exactly been a red-carpet rollout for my career trajectory.”

After his save on Monday, Enright made sure to give credit to his wife Erin for all she has done on this journey.

“I can’t speak highly enough of everything she has done,” Enright said. “The sacrifices she has made because it’s going through treatments and things like that. It’s no easy undertaking, especially for her. I can’t speak high enough of her and everything she has done for me.”

Enright had a two-run lead to work with Monday night. The inherited extra-innings runner scored, but no more.

The Guardians gave Enright a beer shower after the game, allowing him and the rest of the Cleveland roster to appreciate a special moment in the middle of a long season.

“As I’ve learned through this, it’s a really long season," Enright said. "It’s a goal for us to celebrate these little victories, not just for team victories, but career accomplishments and things like that. That’s the fun part of it."

After his MLB debut in May, Enright said, "That was everything I wanted it to be."

Enright has beat the odds, and he's one of the best stories in baseball.
