Guardians' Lane Thomas could see injury-riddled season end with foot surgery

The 2025 season has not gone to plan as Lane Thomas had hoped. The Cleveland Guardians outfielder has been hampered by injuries this season, making it tough for him to consistently be on the field.

Thomas' first injury came during the early part of the season. He was hit by a pitch back in April, which caused a bone bruise in his right wrist. He would head to the IL, and it would take him a month to return.

Not long after he returned, Thomas was then hit with plantar fasciitis that same month. He would go back on the IL, was activated on June 9, only to return to the IL on July 6.

Thomas would then try to return, but during a rehab assignment this month, he felt pain again. He has now been shut down again and will likely be done for the rest of the year, which is not ideal, especially when he is set to become a free agent this winter.

Lane Thomas' injury-riddled season could come to an end with foot surgery

According to The Athletic's Zack Meisel, Thomas is set to see a foot specialist in Indianapolis next week. Surgery is currently on the table to fix the issue, which would set the slugger back three months.

"Thomas will visit a specialist in Indianapolis next week. He has already filled in the specialist on the agony his right foot has caused him this season, and the two sides discussed the potential for Thomas to have a surgical procedure that would come with a three-month recovery plan."

Meisel also points out that this foot injury may have been developing since last season, when he got a bone bruise on his heel, and Thomas has spoken with other players who have faced similar issues. However, for now, Thomas will cheer on his club as they fight for a wild-card spot.
