The Washington Nationals have an open general manager position after they fired GM Mike Rizzo and manager Davey Martinez in early July, shortly before the MLB draft and All-Star Game.
Cleveland Guardians assistant general manager Matt Forman has interviewed for that vacant general manager position. The Washington Post's Andrew Goldman had the original report.
The tweet does not indicate a specific time or place where the Guardians' AGM met with the Nationals' ownership group. Forman started as the director of baseball operations with Cleveland.
Inside the Nationals' GM vacancy
Matt Forman isn't the first candidate to interview for the position. The Cubs' Carter Hawkins also interviewed for the position a few weeks back.
The Nationals won the World Series in 2019 with a really strong core of players, and some thought they would contend for years to come after that. However, 2025 marked the fifth season in a row that the Nationals were non-contenders in July. If you remember that 2019 season correctly, Washington got really hot in early June and overcame improbable odds to make it to the Fall Classic, where they beat the Houston Astros in a thrilling seven-game series.
As for Forman, he is originally a Northwestern product, started as an amateur scouting intern, and quickly became the assistant GM after four years.
Washington has been rolling with interim Mike DeBartolo as the interim GM, and he could also get consideration for the full-time role. The Nationals are 25-36 since July 7, and continue to sit at the bottom of the standings in the National League East.
The reports say that the Nats would like to have the position filled before season's end, which would make sense considering this could be an important free agent period for the organization.
