Grey’s Anatomy Alum Chyler Leigh Reacts to Eric Dane’s “Devastating” Death

The Grey’s Anatomy family will never forget Eric Dane.

And just one week after the actor who played Dr. Mark Sloan —also known as “McSteamy”—died following a yearlong battle with ALS, the drama series paid tribute to his legacy with a montage of some of his greatest moments on the show.

The 60-second tribute, which aired at the end of the Feb. 26 episode and was then shared to social media, featured moments such as Mark dubbing himself and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) the “Plastics Posse,” his friendship with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and the moment he walked her down the aisle as well as his love story with Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh).

The video also included Mark’s most beloved line: “If you love someone, tell them. Even if you’re scared that it’s not the right thing.  Even if you're scared that it'll cause problems. Even if you’re scared it’ll burn your life to the ground, you say it. You say it loud and you go from there.”

Backing the tribute was a song that will always tug at the heartstrings of any Grey’s fan, Tommee Profitt and Fleurie’s cover of “Chasing Cars,” originally by Snow Patrol.

And in a moment that was equal parts touching and heartbreaking, the montage ended with Mark’s brief return to Grey’s in season 17, where he meets Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) on her dream beach and tells her, “Don’t waste one single minute.”

The closing words of the tribute read, “In loving memory of Eric Dane. 1972 – 2026.”

While this was the first time the show itself honored Eric since his death at age 53, a number of his colleagues and peers connected with the show previously spoke out amid their heartbreak.

For Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, Eric will always be “a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families," she wrote in a Feb. 20 Instagram post. "He was truly a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and on audiences around the world.

She continued, "We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship and humanity he shared with us for so many years. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work."

Meanwhile Patrick Dempsey—the McDreamy to Eric’s McSteamy—reflected on their time working together and the deep bonds they forged.

"He was the funniest man," Patrick said during an appearance on Virgin Radio UK. "He's such a joy to work with, and I want to just remember him in that spirit. Anytime he was on set, he brought so much fun to it. He had a great sense of humor. He was easy to work with. We got along instantly.”

In fact, Patrick will never forget their first time working together: “His first scene was him in all his glory coming out of the bathroom with a towel on looking amazing, making me feel completely out of shape and insignificant."
