The Indianapolis Colts landed the heaviest projected player to a team in mock drafts with the Penn State tight end Tyler Warren selection.
Indy was desperate for a playmaking tight end in their offense, and it came down to the wire after the Chicago Bears picked Michigan tight end Colston Loveland at the No. 10 spot.
When grading this selection, the first factor is that the Colts were able to land a projected top-10 pick and didn’t have to give up any draft capital to move up to land him.
Warren can be utilized as an offensive weapon in Shane Steichen’s offense because of his ability to play in-line and in the slot. He also ran wildcat packages at Penn State, which Steichen can implement in his offense for the upcoming season.
One area of Warren’s game that will benefit the Indy offense outside of his pass-catching ability is his toughness. It shows up in his blocking and when he looks to run through tacklers to gain extra yards.
Per Next Gen Stats, Warren is the second-highest rated prospect from this year's class by the NGS overall score (92). His 98 production score is the third-highest mark by a tight end over the last five years.
Overall, the Colts are getting a tight end that immediately upgrades the tight end room and will help improve the rushing attack with his blocking ability. Regardless of whether it’s Anthony Richardson Sr. or Daniel Jones at quarterback, they will have a safety valve at tight end who can be highly productive if the receivers on the outside can do their part to give him one-on-one situations.
