Although the Detroit Tigers started the offseason period slow, they made some notable improvements after falling to the Seattle Mariners in the postseason.
Detroit added the MLB active saves leader Kenley Jansen in addition to one of top starters available on the free agent market, Framber Valdez.
Additionally, the Tigers were able to re-sign some of their top contributors last season, including reliever Kyle Finnegan, starter Jack Flaherty and second baseman Gleyber Torres.
Flaherty agreed to exercise his player option, while Torres signed his qualifying offer to remain with the team.
With Spring Training underway, Torres spoke to the media about his decision to remain in Detroit.
Torres said the following: “Last year was a really good year for me. I felt at home from the first day. I felt really good. I know the group. I know as an organization, they really want to compete. What happened last year showed us what we want in the future."
In his first season away from the Bronx, Torres produced for the Tigers, earning his first All-Star appearances since back-to-back trips in 2018 and 2019.
Although he cooled off in the second half due to injury, Torres finished the year with 2.9 WAR, 136 hits, 16 home runs and 74 RBIs with a .256 batting average.
Heading into the 2026 season, along with stars like Tarik Skubal and Valdez, Torres will have the opportunity to prove Detroit's status as title contenders against other top American League ball clubs.
The Tigers will begin their season Mar. 26 against the San Diego Padres.
