Giants 'would love' to trade away stars worth nearly $600 million combined

The 2026 season for the San Francisco Giants has been a massive letdown. While a lot of focus has been on the New York Mets, the Giants have the same record and are just as bad, if not worse.

There's a lot wrong with this team right now, between the lackluster pitching staff and the struggling offense, the Giants are in a pretty bad spot as a franchise right now.

And according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Giants reportedly "would love" to trade away star players worth nearly $600 million. That includes Rafael Devers and three other key offensive pieces that are playing well below expectations.

"The Giants would love to unload outfielder Jung Hoo Lee ($85 million left on his contract), shortstop Willy Adames ($161 million remaining), first baseman Rafael Devers ($226.5 million remaining), and Matt Chapman ($125 million remaining) and start over," Nightengale writes.

If the Giants did find a way to make such sweeping changes, shedding a combined $597.5 million total if they moved all four of these players, it would be a massive admission that this iteration of the Giants is not it.

Entering into a rebuild would be a huge letdown for this team, especially considering the hype about this team when they traded for Devers last year.

But now, not only is Devers someone the Giants look like they want to trade away, but Lee, Chapman, and Adames are all players the Giants are seemingly willing to part with.

There likely would be a contender or two interested in these players, but the question for the Giants would be what they could get in return for a trade with these players.

Their expensive contracts will make a trade difficult to accomplish, but if 2026 continues to be a disaster, this collection of players worth nearly $600 million would make sense as trade chips this year and into the offseason.

A full-scale reset might not be the worst idea, but in reality, it will be nearly impossible to accomplish, and the Giants surely wouldn't be able to bring back enough value either.

The theory might make sense, but in practice, it's not likely to work. The Giants might just be stuck with these players for a while and are hoping that they can all find a way to turn things around.

Even though Nightengale is reporting that the Giants would love to move on from these players, it is a lot easier said than done, whether at the 2026 trade deadline or over the offseason.
