Through five games, the San Francisco Giants' .594 team OPS ranks 26th in the Majors under first-year manager Tony Vitello.
It doesn't help that the NL West club was held to just one run across three games in the opening series of the season against the New York Yankees. That being said, the Giants could certainly use extra power in their lineup.
Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer tabbed the Giants as a potential landing spot for a 23-year-old outfielder from the Washington Nationals, despite the trade deadline still being months away.
The youngster earned his first All-Star selection in 2025, hitting 35 home runs with a .825 OPS in 157 games for a rebuilding Nationals organization.
Giants-Nationals trade idea sends budding star to San Francisco
In recent seasons, the Nationals have made significant trades, sending their cornerstone players to contenders. Shortstop Trea Turner was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, and who can forget the San Diego Padres acquisition of superstar outfielder Juan Soto in 2022.
Left fielder James Wood could be a key piece of Washington's rebuild, but they could also ship him away for the right price. The Rymer lists the Giants as one of the clubs that could show interest in Wood.
"Even so, the appeal for would-be buyers is obvious. The 6'6", 234-pound Wood is one of the most purely powerful sluggers in MLB, as seen in how his exit velocity and hard-hit rate both landed in the 98th percentile last season," Rymer wrote.
Wood swings and misses a lot, and he struck out in 32.1% of his plate appearances last season. Maybe the Giants could make a few mechanical adjustments and turn him into one of their building blocks for the future.
