The San Francisco Giants are poised for a busy offseason, with Buster Posey set to make some changes to a roster that's capable of making a playoff push in 2026.
While there are some issues to address across the roster, adding depth pieces is equally important. Taking fliers on former top prospects is also worthwhile, and the Giants made such a move early in the offseason.
According to Susan Slusser of The sfchronicle.com, the Giants are making a trade with the Miami Marlins for a former top-three Milwaukee Brewers prospect outfielder in Joey Wiemer.
Giants trade for former Brewers top-three outfield prospect
"Sounds like the Giants just acquired Joey Wiemer," Slusser reports, "Miami had DFA'd Wiemer earlier this week, not sure what the return is."
The Giants are adding Wiemer, who was recently DFA'd by the Marlins, via trade. The compensation given up for Wiemer is minimal, but his addition is still a notable one.
He played in 132 games for the Brewers in 2023, hitting .204 with a .645 OPS. In 410 plate appearances, he had 79 hits, 48 runs, 19 doubles, 13 home runs, 42 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, 36 walks, and 116 strikeouts.

Wiemer then spent time with the Cincinnati Reds in 2024, though he played in just two games. In 2025, he joined the Marlins and hit .236 in 27 games with a .715 OPS. While not anything incredible, it was his best season in the Major Leagues so far.
Once ranked as the Brewers' third-best prospect in 2023, Wiemer was a highly viewed outfield prospect. But, after some time with the Brewers, Reds, and Marlins, he's now heading to the Giants.
Wiemer is an interesting pickup for the Giants, as he was a top-three prospect just three years ago. This is a worthwhile addition for the Giants, as it's a low-risk move that could turn into something positive if he can turn things around in San Francisco.
