Giants' Tony Vitello hinting at favoritism before arriving in Bay Area with Drew Gilbert comments

The San Francisco Giants just wrapped up an up-and-down season that ended in disappointment. The loss prompted the organization to part ways with manager Bob Melvin — a surprising move considering the team had previously stated they planned to pick up his option for 2026.

In the midst of the shake-up, the Giants made history with the hiring of Tony Vitello. It marks the first time a college head coach has made the jump to manage a Major League Baseball team without any prior professional coaching experience.

Buster Posey was particularly impressed with Vitello during the interview process.

“Throughout our search, Tony’s leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to developing players stood out. His ability to build strong, cohesive teams and his passion for the game align perfectly with the values of our organization. We look forward to the energy and direction he will bring, along with the memories to be made, as we focus on the future of Giants baseball,” Posey said.

While Posey ultimately made the hire, it was Drew Gilbert who helped put Vitello on the Giants’ radar.

“I don’t know if any of this happens without Drew Gilbert, I really don’t,” The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly said on the air.

Vitello departs from Tennessee, leaving behind a program he built from the ground up — and plenty of heartbreak in Knoxville. During his farewell press conference, he displayed his trademark humor.

“By now, you all know I officially accepted a position to babysit Drew Gilbert,” Vitello said.

While the remark was made in jest, it paints a clear picture of the connection between the two. It’s almost a guarantee that Gilbert will be an everyday starter under Vitello.

However, while the move seemed inevitable, it could also spark tension in the clubhouse. If other players feel they deserve that spot, Vitello may still stick with his guy — Gilbert. It’s already shaping up to be a fascinating situation to watch unfold in San Francisco.
