The New York Giants were one of the teams in on former New York Jets guard Alijah Vera-Tucker before he ultimately signed with the New England Patriots.
And the Giants were apparently at least somewhat close to signing the veteran guard, according to SNY's Connor Hughes, but he decided not to sign in New York after the two sides couldn't agree on the length of his contract.
That sent Vera-Tucker to the Patriots, who gave the veteran guard a three-year, $42 million deal.
"Sources: The Giants and Alijah Vera-Tucker reached an impasse other the length of the contract. It proved too much to work through, even though there was internal optimism within New York’s building that they could as late as 1030pm tonight," Hughes reported.
It's not hard to see why the Giants weren't willing to go more years in whatever deal they were offering for Vera-Tucker.
The former Jets first-round pick has had major injury issues during his career and is coming off a 2025 campaign in which he didn't play at all. Before that, he missed a total of 10 games in 2022 and 12 games in 2023.
Making long-term commitment on Vera-Tucker would have been a gamble, especially at the amount he got from New England.
This might be one of those instances where the Giants dodged a bullet and are better off going in a different direction.
And, according to Hughes, that different direction might be Cleveland Browns free agent Wyatt Teller, who is reportedly on New York's radar as a contingency plan.
