Giants receive 'pessimistic' trade update on Rafael Devers, Willy Adames

The San Francisco Giants are strongly trending towards selling at this year's MLB trade deadline. While the full extent of their fire sale isn't known, it appears that some of the big names might be available for trade.

Other than Logan Webb and maybe even Jung Hoo Lee, the Giants have seemingly opened the door for a trade of Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, or Willy Adames alongside Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray.

However, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the trade update on Adames and Devers isn't exactly good news for the Giants, as the club is reporting "pessimistic" that a trade with either could come to fruition for one simple reason: money.

"They're pessimistic about the odds of trading Rafael Devers or Willy Adames with their bloated contracts," Nightengale reports.

The Giants are likely sellers this summer, but the chance of seeing either Adames or Devers being traded looks slim at this point.

Why this is the case is very straightforward: both Devers and Adames are under contract on deals far-too-large for teams to be interested in adding this summer.

Devers is in year-three of a 10-year, $313.5 million contract that began in 2024 and runs through the 2033 season. That's a lot of money an acquiring team would have to take on, or make up for in a trade if the Giants eat some of the contract.

Adames isn't much better, as he's in the second season of a seven-year, $182 million contract that runs through the 2032 season.

Both sluggers would cost a ton to acquire alone, not to mention the financial aspect, which makes a trade a lot trickier, especially with an uncertain collective bargaining agreement upcoming for MLB.

While they might have teams interested in a vacuum, their contract situations make a trade very difficult to pull off, much harder than Chapman, who is under contract for only four more seasons at $100 million total.

Another reason why is simple: unlike Chapman, both Devers and Adames are struggling this season. Between their lackluster production, their massive contracts, and the tricky nature of a trade, neither Adames nor Devers is looking likely to be dealt this summer.
