Giants predicted to trade for 29-year old All Star

The San Francisco Giants underwhelmed last season.

With lots of talent, bolstered even more by the midseason trade for Rafael Devers, the Giants still couldn't find their way to the playoffs.

That has put some scrutiny on them this offseason, although they haven't pulled off anything major to this point.

That could change if they manage a trade -- ESPN's Bradford Doolittle is predicting that the Giants land second baseman Brendan Donovan in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Donovan has both played in an All-Star Game and won a Gold Glove in his career, and the powerful-swinging lefty is 29 years old.

"The Giants need a second baseman and the Cardinals are trading any hitter within sniffing distance of age 30," Doolittle writes. "It's a perfect match, albeit less enthralling than when the Cardinals and Giants swapped Rogers Hornsby and Frankie Frisch."

Donovan isn't great hitting same-side against left-handed pitching, but the Giants even have a solution for that.

"The Giants are even a good team to paper over Donovan's career platoon weakness against lefties," Doolittle writes. "You pair his career .812 OPS against righties with Tyler Fitzgerald's .841 OPS against lefties and you've got a strong keystone combination. The Cardinals could then turn the position over to Thomas Saggese and clear a little runway for JJ Wetherholt's imminent arrival."

Donovan's name doesn't come with quite the feeling of a splash that one of the big-name free agents would've for the Giants.

But he would fill a need at likely a not-too-prohibitive cost. It'd be something worth pursuing for the Giants before the new season arrives.
