Giants predicted to cut ties with former starter in deadline trade with Vikings

The New York Giants find themselves in a tough spot going into the NFL trade deadline.

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are both fighting for their jobs and need to win as many games as possible, but selling off valuable pieces isn't going to help them achieve that goal.

However, New York is also rebuilding and could use more draft capital to push that process along. Then again, allowing Schoen to make any significant moves when he's on the hot seat isn't a great idea, either.

One player who the Giants can trade without impacting their future outlook is quarterback Russell Wilson, who USA TODAY's Jacob Camenker predicts will land with the Minnesota Vikings at the trade deadline.

Carson Wentz is going to miss the rest of the season because of a left shoulder injury. That leaves the Vikings with little experience at quarterback, as J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer will enter Week 9 having combined to make just two NFL starts.

Wilson began the year as the Giants' starter, but that quickly went by the wayside when the team turned to Jaxson Dart following Wilson's unsuccessful three-game stint.

Wilson is currently serving as the QB2 in New York, but with Jameis Winston also on the roster, the former Super Bowl champion signal-caller is very expendable.

While Wilson's play has clearly declined in recent years, he would still be a welcomed addition for a team in need of a veteran backup, and his contract isn't expensive and he's a free agent in 2026, so there's no long-term commitment.

The Vikings could definitely use a veteran backup in the wake of the season-ending injury to Carson Wentz, which leaves Minnesota with two total wild cards in J.J. McCarthy, who the jury is still out on, and rookie Max Brosmer, who is nothing close to an adequate insurance policy if McCarthy gets hurt or struggles.

Wilson would certainly be a better insurance policy than Brosmer, even in his diminished state, and it probably wouldn't cost more than a late Day 3 pick to acquire him. He would also serve as a great mentor to McCarthy.

Quite frankly, we'd prefer the Vikings go after Winston instead, seeing as how he offers much more upside than Wilson. But the Vikings could certainly do worse than adding the 36-year-old quarterback.
