Giants missing crucial piece of information after Rafael Devers deal with Red Sox

If Rafael Devers wasn't disgruntled, it's highly unlikely the San Francisco Giants would have had a chance to trade for him.

The Giants made the blockbuster trade that stunned the baseball world on Sunday, acquiring Devers from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a four-player package that didn't contain a single player that will join Boston's active roster for their upcoming series in Seattle.

There are conflicting reports over whether or not Devers requested a trade, but Giants president of baseball operations saw an opportunity to grab one of the best bats in the sport. Quite understandably, he took it.

But what position will Devers play in San Francisco? That's the $255 million question, and right now, we don't have a clear answer.

On Monday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reported that the Giants made the trade without a concrete understanding of where Devers will agree to play on defense, after very publicly blasting the Red Sox for moving him from third base to designated hitter, then later asking him if he was willing to try first base.

"Devers offers little, if any, defensive value. The Giants aren’t even sure where he will agree to play. It’s entirely possible that they just locked themselves into shelling out around $30 million per season through 2033 for a full-time designated hitter," Baggarly wrote.

Baggarly also included a quote from Posey, who said he didn't yet know how things were going to work out with Devers' position, but that he was excited to figure out the solution.

“I don’t know,” Posey said. “Some of it’s just conversations with (Red Sox GM) Craig Breslow and him saying that some of the stuff that’s been in the media was a bit unfortunate. It’s hard to say.

"The reports that I’ve gotten from other people across the industry are that Raffi is a great teammate, loves to play the game, and (I’m) excited to be able to have those conversations with him and figure out how he’s going to best fit into our lineup defensively and offensively.”

When there's uncertainty, it's better to be the team acquiring the elite hitter than the team losing him. So as much as the Giants now have big questions to answer, they're waking up feeling like big winners on Monday.
