Giants make contradictory decision by trading Tyler Rogers to the Mets, but get huge prospect haul at least

The San Francisco Giants maybe aren't going for it as much as some would've thought.

The team that jumpstarted trade season by getting Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox sent away a star reliever on Wednesday.

Tyler Rogers, the brilliant submariner, is going to the New York Mets, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

It's a move that contradicts the idea of the Giants as a contender. And while there was some suggestion they'd deal away from their bullpen surplus, it was thought it might be to get MLB help.

Instead, it's two prospects and a lesser reliever than Rogers.

Jose Butto is the MLB-ready player in return, which works but isn't a big deal.

The bigger story of the trade are the two prospects coming back.

One, Blade Tidwell, is a right-handed starting pitcher who has already appeared in the major leagues. He's ranked as the Mets' No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

He comes with the Mets' No. 12 prospect, outfielder Drew Gilbert, who is super toolsy but hasn't always put it together consistently.

There are a lot of layers here.

The first is that trading Rogers probably doesn't make or break the Giants' season. They still have a strong bullpen.

The second is that it's still a slightly curious move. Does it send a good message to the clubhouse to trade away such a contributor?

And the third takeaway: It's a pretty strong haul to get for Rogers, who is on an expiring contract. It's much better for San Francisco than letting him get away this offseason in free agency for nothing.

So is it a win, or a loss? That's tough to say on the day of the deal.

But it's movement, and it's the Giants trying to make something happen. It was worth a shot.
