It's one thing for the New York Giants to want rookie first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart to sit the bench and learn from veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston for the 2025 NFL season.
It's another thing if he's simply too good to keep off the field.
We're still a ways away from that being the case for Dart, but so far, so good this offseason.
Giants coach Brian Daboll met with reporters Tuesday at the team's mandatory minicamp and sang Dart's praises.
“He’s done excellent,” Daboll said. “He’s picking up the information. It’s really good to have Russ and Jameis and even Tommy — because Tommy’s been in this system for a few years here and is kind of the head statesman in terms of that and all the adjustments that take place, or the calls."
Jaxson Dart has been "excellent" in the Giants' spring program, says Brian Daboll:
"He's smart, he's aggressive with the football - which I like...he's progressed since he's been here" pic.twitter.com/mMcZe7ndOK
There's no doubt that Jaxson Dart is benefiting from his relationship with Wilson and Winston, and, by most accounts, Wilson is having a great start to his offseason as well.

But the simple truth is this: The Giants have a much bigger investment and vested interest in Dart becoming a successful, long-term answer at quarterback. Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen's jobs depend on it. So if the rookie continues on this upward trajectory throughout training camp, his number will be called sooner rather than later.
"[Dart has] fit right in with those guys," Daboll said. "He’s smart. He’s aggressive with the football, which I like. And then, the true test will be once we start and there’s live hitting in preseason games and things like that. But he’s progressed — since he’s been here, to where he is now, he’s made good improvement.”
All it will take is one losing streak or a few head-scratching throws by Wilson for the fans at MetLife stadium to being chanting Jaxson Dart's name. And when that time comes, I doubt Brian Daboll will hesitate to move on to Big Blue's QB-next.
