Giants’ Greg Newsome II thinks he has what it takes to keep Goliath Cowboys receiver tandem in check

The best way to straighten out the side-eyed reactions to Greg Newsome II claiming the Giants have “the best cornerback room in the league” is to prove it against arguably the NFL’s best receiver duo. 

And that’s the season-opening challenge that the Cowboys’ 2,500-yard pairing of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens poses Sept. 13. 

“A cornerback’s dream is to go against the best,” Newsome said. “If you want to be the best — and that’s what we want to be this season — why not showcase it Week 1? I’m super excited for the challenge and my guys will be ready.” 

Newsome, who signed a one-year, $8 million free-agent deal, emerged from training camp as the surprise No. 1 cornerback. Resurgent former first-round pick Deonte Banks and former free-agent prize Paulson Adebo (team-high $24.1 million salary-cap charge) are battling to start on the other side, Dru Phillips is locked into the slot — where Lamb lined up for one-third of his snaps last season — and rookie second-rounder Colton Hood is waiting in the wings.
