The San Francisco Giants are looking to contend with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the NL West, and to do so, they need to get the most out of all of their players.
But another way they can contend with the best in MLB is if a player or two has a huge breakout season. And early in Spring Training, there's already a clear player in top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt to keep a very close eye on.
As Markus Boucher of KNBR shared on Twitter/x, Whisenhunt showed a significant increase in velocity that should have Giants fans and personnel excited about his 2026 season.
Giants' Carson Whisenhunt shows 5-mph increase in fastball velocity
"Carson Whisenhunt consistently hitting 96-97 mph in Spring Training," Boucher shared at Giants' spring training.

— Markus Boucher (@MarkusBoucher) February 19, 2026That's a massive development for the Giants. Last year, Whisenhunt was sitting at an average of 92.6 mph. If he's getting to around 97 mph, then he's essentially added an extra five miles-per-hour to his velocity this offseason.
The lefty pitcher is a top prospect of the Giants, and he's already made his MLB debut. He pitched in five games last season, going 23.1 innings, and recording a 5.01 ERA with a 2-1 record, 22 hits allowed, six homers allowed, and 16 strikeouts with 12 walks.

However, if he's able to consistently hit 96-97 mph in 2026, then his numbers should improve a good bit. Even at the least generous figure, Whisenhunt has still jumped up roughly three miles per hour this offseason.
This could be a huge development for the Giants. A lefty with such a strong fastball and nice breaking pitches is absolutely a Major League pitcher.
After this showing, Whisenhunt is one of the more interesting players Giants fans should keep an eye on this Spring Training. If he can bring this to games this spring and show command, he could be a huge weapon for the Giants this season.
