Giants' free agent update is good news on star lefty Framber Valdez

The San Francisco Giants have signed Adrian Houser to a two-year, $22 million free agent deal to join the starting rotation.

But, they shouldn't be done adding to the rotation just yet. With a hole in the rotation still open, the Giants have plenty of reason to target the top starters left on the market.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Giants are indeed getting involved in the free agent market. Specifically, the Giants have met with former Houston Astros free agent star lefty Framber Valdez this winter, pointing towards a potential signing.

"The Mets, along with the Giants and Orioles, are among teams that met with star free agent pitcher Framber Valdez," Heyman reported after Christmas.

This meeting between the Giants and Valdez is a good sign that San Francisco's front office is serious about potentially signing Valdez to a free agent deal.

While they easily could've been out of the top of the market for free agent pitching, the Giants are planning to go after Valdez, the most reliable starter on the market.

Valdez is a two-time All-Star and 2022 World Series champion. He's one of the more reliable starters on the market, and as a left-hander, would help the Giants rotation round out into one of the better ones in Major League baseball.

It won't be a cheap deal for the Giants, as his new contract will likely reach above nine figures. Valdez put up a 3.66 ERA in 2025, and it's a down season for the veteran lefty.

He's put up a 3.36 ERA in his eight-year MLB career, and would be a great signing for the Giants. Heyman's report is good news for this potential signing, as the Giants have made the first step necessary to make this big free agent signing.
