Giants could land projected $160 million quarterback after breakout season

The New York Giants will be linked to just about every quarterback available on the market as they look to right the ship following a 14-loss season.

After benching and then releasing Daniel Jones midway through the season, the Giants leaned on Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito and even Tim Boyle to work under center.

Unsurprisingly, it turned out to be a disaster that helped the Giants land the No. 3 overall pick in the draft while losing more games than ever in franchise history.

Finding a quarterback is essential to save the jobs of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, and Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report believes the Giants are among the landing spots for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.

"With over $40 million in cap space, the Giants have the cabbage to take a run at Darnold. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen also need more than a one-year band-aid at quarterback, as another bad season will probably be their last," Davenport wrote. "The hardest sell here may be convincing Darnold to play 8-9 home games in MetLife Stadium again."

The Giants may not even get a chance to take a run at Darnold if he winds up getting franchise-tagged by the Vikings, which is certainly a possibility.

There's going to be a level of "buyer beware" when it comes to Darnold. Did he truly take a step forward or was much of his improvement due to the work of Kevin O'Connell? It's most likely a mix of both.

However, Spotrac is projecting Darnold could be in the market to land a four-year, $160 million contract — almost identical to the one Jones received following the 2022 season.

It's hard to say whether the Giants would want to go down that road again, but their biggest need comes at the quarterback position so they'll be linked throughout the process.
