Two seasons ago the Houston Rockets won a measly 22 games. Now, led by Ime Udoka, they saw 52 dubs this year, proving to be a legit playoff contender in just his second season with the team.
During his first season in charge (2023-2024), the Rockets win total jumped by 19 and they have increased it by double digits in back to back seasons. Despite losing in the first round to the heavily experienced Golden State Warriors, Houston’s future is extremely promising.
The likes of Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr, and Cam Whitmore are all under the age of 23, so reaching these heights while relying on some younger players makes it even more impressive.
The Rockets ranked fourth in defensive rating this season with a 110.8 and led the NBA in offensive rebound rate. These stats represent their identity of physicality and hustle, stemming from Udoka’s philosophies.
When it comes to critiquing Houston, the offensive side of the ball is where they need to improve as they rank near the bottom of the league in assist percentage and are in the middle of the pack when it comes to scoring/three point shooting.
Back in November, Udoka spoke to The Ringer about the foundation of his squad and what he will be looking for moving forward.
“We really wanted to solidify [defense] last year, and I think we laid that foundation,” he said. “But now we’re really trying to get our offense going to kind of match that. And so part of the challenge was to come in and change the numbers and perception last year on that side. But we want to be a well-balanced team, and as much as defense is second nature to me, I’d say offense is as fun, and we want to grow in that area and be formidable on both sides of the ball.”

In just two seasons Udoka has played a massive role in the trajectory of the Houston Rockets. As they approach the offseason, the Rockets are in a unique spot where they could choose to take things slow, allowing their players to get more seasons and experience together. With that being said, Houston could also decide to hunt for another star player and they definitely have the assets to do so.
In terms of draft capital, there aren’t too many teams in a better position. Houston currently owns Phoenix’s first-round picks in 2025, 2027, and 2029, Dallas’s first-round pick in 2029, and a pick swap with Brooklyn in 2027.
At the same time, championship windows can close rapidly. While they are very young, the Rockets have the capacity to make a large swing this summer and Giannis Antetokounmpo might be available.
