Georgia adds transfer portal 5.2ypc running back who's from Alabama

Georgia only hosted one transfer portal running back on a visit.

The Bulldogs knew who they wanted, and now they've got him.

That's former Illinois star Josh McCray.

McCray's only recruiting visit was to Georgia, as well, so this seemed like a match made from the start.

He spent four years at Illinois growing into a player worthy of a transfer to the SEC powerhouse.

McCray is from Enterprise, Alabama.

In 2024, McCray ran for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns while picking up 5.2 yards per carry.

McCray is an absolute bruiser, measuring in at 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds.

Illinois coach Bret Bielma spoke recently about McCray, not even disappointed in his decision to transfer.

"It's been a four-year conversation," Bielema told Illini Inquirer last week. "Josh is a kid we're incredibly proud of. He should finish up this spring with a degree. He's going to walk out of here as a four-year player who has done a lot of really good things. He was the bowl game MVP... Josh came in and expressed his interest in getting in the portal yesterday. Obviously, I talked to him about what I thought we could do and where we're at, but his intentions are to get in the portal, and I totally understand that.

"The great thing with me as a head coach is he's walking out of here with a degree and accomplished a lot of really good things. I know a lot of people have opinions on it, but I wasn't shocked at what yesterday was. We've prepared for that moment."

That's really thoughtful from the Fighting Illini head coach.

Now McCray will get a year to try to make similar fans in Athens, Georgia.

If he can power his way to 5.2 yards per carry again, this time in the SEC, he'll likely have a huge Bulldogs fan club.
