Geno Smith's Jets future could be decided sooner than expected

The New York Jets are heading into a fresh season hoping to turn around their 3-14 record. It's been a while since this franchise had something to give it hope, but between head coach Aaron Glenn and veteran quarterback Geno Smith, there are some signs of life in the Jets' camp.

When it comes to Smith, this is a big year for the quarterback. It's a make-or-break moment. After hopping from one franchise to the next, he has a chance to show that he's still a high-caliber starting signal-caller, and if he has an impressive season with the Jets, that will go a long way toward his legacy.

Geno Smith's Jets future could be decided sooner than expected

Dan Graziano of ESPN has released a tally of quarterback predictions heading into the new season and for 2027, including the draft taken into consideration, and beyond. One is about Smith.

He points out that the Jets don't have to wait until the end of 2026 for Smith's fate to become clear. If the Jets don't do well under him, it will become obvious that they'll have to start looking ahead to the 2027 draft or turn to Cade Klubnik. If Smith does well, they could decide early that he's worth keeping.

Still, he points out that since the Jets have three first-round picks in the 2027 draft, they'd be silly not to use one to get a quarterback for the future.

"But whatever Smith does this season isn't likely to deter the Jets from their mission of finding the long-term answer at the position in next year's draft," Graziano notes.
