California’s highest-in-the-nation gas prices are causing some people to turn to desperate measures to get the fuel they need.
Surveillance video shared by Diamond Learning Center in Clovis, a daycare center that helps those with intellectual disabilities, show a man sneaking into a gated parking lot on Sunday toward a van used to transport students.
Moments later, he is shown running out of the parking lot carrying a large gas container in hand.
A man is seen running away after stealing gas from a van, surveillance footage showed. Diamond Learning CenterTwo other containers were left behind, Isaac Jimenez, senior director at Diamond Learning Center, told FOX26 News.
“He planned to take more than what he took because he had several containers with him,” he said.
It can cost around $100 to fill up one of the large vans, he added, and stealing gas could also impact students at the center, who crucially rely on that transportation.
“We have to rearrange routes, so students get picked up in a timely manner, calling parents, and make sure they’re going to get picked up, but just at a later time,” Jimenez said.
The center reported the incident to the Clovis Police Department. The California Post reached out to the center to inquire about any updates.
Elevated spikes in fuel prices often correlate with increased levels of fuel theft, according to a 2023 academic study. The center also said it has seen incidents like this before when gas prices soar.

Combined with California Democrat’s green agenda that has led to higher-than-average taxes and closed refineries, the prices are unusually high in the Golden State.
As of Tuesday, the average price of gas was $5.82 per gallon, about a 30-cent climb from last week, according to the American Automobile Association.
Politicians from both parties are trying to ease the pain. State Republicans proposed a bill to suspend gas taxes.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and San Jose mayor Matt Mahan has also voiced support for the idea and called on Sacramento Democrats to follow suit.
However, the legislation died last week.
“To say I’m disappointed is an understatement,” state Sen. Tony Strickland, author of the bill, said. “We have an opportunity to help working families at a time when we have an affordability crisis. Democrats in Sacramento refused to help struggling Californians.”
