Gary Cohen zings Keith Hernandez after lamenting end of bloodline

Even when the Mets are struggling, there’s never a dull moment on an SNY broadcast.

That’s thanks to Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez.

After Hernandez lamented that his family lineage is ending during Tuesday night’s broadcast, Cohen poked fun at him for his rant during the Mets’ 6-2 win over the Royals on Wednesday.

In the fourth inning, SNY aired a photo montage of Little League players from around the tri-state area.

One kid in the montage played for the Crushers in New Brunswick, N.J., while others were fellow New Jersey locales such as Butler and Maywood.

But none were related to Keith Hernandez.

“Some little leaguers,” Cohen said on the broadcast. “None of whom are Keith’s grandkids. Sorry, Keith. I couldn’t help myself.”

“That’s okay,” Hernandez answered with a chuckle. “Some people can’t take a joke.”

Whether it was in joking fashion or not, Hernandez was upset Tuesday while venting that there won’t be anymore Hernandezes — whether it’s on the field or in a broadcast booth.

“My two (kids) are in their 40s, they’re not going to have kids,” Hernandez said.

“I won’t go into one of them. That’s not gonna happen. So, the (family) line is burnt. It’s burnt. It just burned down.”

While Hernandez said he has two kids from his adopted daughter Jessie, he noted that his two biological daughters – Melissa and Mary – don’t have kids and he believes they likely never will.

He added that his brother Gary has two kids who probably also won’t have children.

“There’s no passing down. We’re done. My brother and I are done, we’re done,” Hernandez said.

Even if there isn’t another Hernandez in the Mets’ broadcast booth, the long-time SNY analyst has made a name for himself alongside Cohen and Ron Darling.

Hernandez has been with SNY since 2006 and has won three Emmys across 20 years.
