The Game of Thrones franchise is moving to the big screen. Today, we found out that the spinoff film, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, is officially slated to head to theaters on June 1, 2029.
2029 is still a long ways away, but, as Entertainment Weekly reports, follows Warner Bros./HBO’s goal to have one Game of Thrones project released every year. Season two of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will come out in 2027, and the fourth (and last) season of House of the Dragon is scheduled to come out in 2028. That left 2029 open, and Aegon’s Conquest has swooped in to fill the void.
The movie will be directed by Owen Harris, whose previous credits include the impeccable Mrs. Davis and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards) writing the script. (I have to admit, as someone who noped out of House of the Dragon—see photo above—after season one and enjoyed Seven Kingdoms, their backgrounds make me more interested in this latest project.)
While there’s no official news on what Aegon’s Conquest will cover, I’d bet a stuffed pheasant that it will cover Aegon Targaryen’s conquering of what comes to be known as the Seven Kingdoms. For those not up on George R.R. Martin’s worldbuilding, Aegon I (aka Aegon the Conqueror) was born in Dragonstone. He married two of his sisters (one for duty and one for desire), as Targaryens are wont to do, and successfully conquered Westeros (in part because of their kickass dragons) and created the Iron Throne, a seat of swords that readers of the books and viewers of the original HBO series will be familiar with.
This movie presumably replaces the TV series in the works centered on Aegon, which Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) was working on. There’s no news yet on casting for this project; not surprising given its release date is still a ways out. But we should be hearing more in the upcoming months.
