(Bloomberg) — France’s renewable energy industry urged lawmakers to ditch proposed legislation that would impose a moratorium on approving new solar and wind projects, saying it would destroy jobs and stall the nation’s plan to curb its use of polluting fossil fuels.

The outcry comes as lawmakers of Marine Le Pen’s anti-immigration party and some conservative legislators amended a proposed energy bill on Thursday with the moratorium, blaming solar and wind for boosting energy prices. The legislation, which also calls for the construction of new atomic plants, will be submitted to a vote in the Lower House of Parliament on June 24, and — if adopted — will be sent back to the Senate for a second reading.

The bill “jeopardizes tens of thousands of jobs and sacrifices our energy future beyond the next 10 years,” Jules Nyssen, president of Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables, said in a statement Friday.

The legislative uncertainty is a setback for President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to fight global warming and boost France’s energy security. That involves promoting new nuclear plants, plus a swathe of renewable power projects, green fuels, and heat pumps for homes.

Macron’s government has been forced to seek compromises after a snap election last summer fractured the National Assembly into three roughly equal blocs. Earlier this month, the Parliament canceled a law on so-called low-emission zones, which ban the most polluting cars from city centers.

The moratorium on solar and wind projects “is sending a disastrous signal,” Industry and Energy Minister Marc Ferracci said in a statement Friday. France needs “a clear and ambitious road map” to exit from fossil fuels and have “abundant, decarbonized and competitive” energy, he said.
