Freddy Peralta has likely ruined his free agent value despite Rays comeback

The 2026 season for Freddy Peralta was one meant to be the spark that led him to earn a massive contract in the 2026-2027 free agent cycle.

He was likely looking at a deal somewhere similar to Dylan Cease's $210 million seven-year contract. After a brutal stint with the New York Mets, those hopes were dashed. But he rebounded with the Tampa Bay Rays and has looked good lately.

Unfortunately, it's too little, too late. Matt Snyder of CBS Sports highlighted how Peralta is likely headed towards a one-year prove-it deal rather than a big contract despite his rebound with the Rays lately.

"Even with the late hot streak, Peralta has probably put himself in a position of needing to take a one-year deal to try and pitch back to 2025 form to land a bigger payday," Snyder writes.

Peralta had a 4.99 ERA with the Mets across 22 starts, and in eight outings with the Rays this season, he has a much better 3.86 ERA.

But even that production in Tampa Bay isn't good enough to get teams to spend a fortune on Peralta. It would likely have to be a dominant postseason run en route to a World Series title to secure a legitimate contract in free agency.

Even if he plays that well, there are going to be plenty of teams worried about Peralta returning to his Mets self, when he was worth -0.4 bWAR in 22 starts and was having the worst year of his big-league career.

There is reason to believe in Peralta, but his poor 2026 season has likely pushed any long-term contract hopes well into the future, if they ever come to pass at all.

This was a brutal time for Peralta to regress, as all he had to do was put together a decent season, and he could've been looking at a massive nine-figure payday. Now, it's not likely to be much more than $20 million for one year on a prove-it deal.
