Franklin Arias' promotion to AAA could put Red Sox top prospect on fast track to the majors

The Boston Red Sox used to have a top-tier farm in the MLB, but it fell off a bit after the Big Three of Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell were promoted, and the pitching duo of Connelly Early and Payton Tolle. 

However, their farm has started to build itself up again, as their top prospect and No. 7 in the MLB, Franklin Arias, has been promoted to AAA Worcester. With that in mind, Arias might be knocking on the door of the MLB pretty soon.

Arias raked in AA

Arias started this season in AA Portland, and was a monster for the Sea Dogs. In 75 games this season, he slashed .318/.407/.587/.993 with 17 doubles, 19 home runs, and 52 RBI. 

He also had a great glove at shortstop, with a fielding percentage of nearly 99%. Overall, he looks like he could be a superstar-in-the-making for Boston.

Arias might see another quick promotion

With how Boston’s season is now going and a potential playoff push almost inevitable, getting as many star bats in their lineup will be a must. This means by September, Boston might bite the bullet and promote Arias to the MLB after a month in AAA, as long as he continues to play well.

They have a history of quickly promoting their players; Campbell, Mayer, and Anthony all played less than 75 AAA games before being promoted to the MLB; Tolle only got three starts before he was called up to the MLB. 

Should they promote Arias this season?

It really depends on how much the Red Sox need right-handed hitting, and how well Arias does in AAA this next month. If the Sox don’t splurge on a real righty slugger this trade deadline, Arias could be needed. 

On the flip side, rushing prospects has not always worked out for Boston. Sure, Anthony and Tolle turned out ok, but Mayer and Campbell have yet to really settle in as MLB players. 

So,  in regards to Arias’ development, Boston should make sure they get their righty or righties at the deadline. Otherwise, they better hope rushing Arias won’t cause future consequences.
