Gearing up for Opening Day, the New York Mets received encouraging news Sunday.

Following surgery, star shortstop Francisco Lindor returned to Spring Training action Sunday, leading off against the Blue Jays.

Before being replaced by Ronny Mauricio, Lindor went 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored and a strikeout.

His newest infield partner, Marcus Semien went 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.

After the game, Lindor spoke about his debut, acknowledging it was a good start.

“It was a really good experience,” Lindor said. “I felt like I was pretty much like myself and I finished the game healthy. Overall, it was a good day for me.”

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets plan to be cautious with Lindor even after returning, planning to play him every other day to finish the preseason.

New York has seven Spring Training games remaining which should allow Lindor enough time to ramp up before Opening Day.

When heathy, Lindor has produced with some of the best shortstops in baseball.

In 11 seasons, Lindor has amassed over 55 career WAR and finished top-10 in MVP voting seven times, including second place in 2024.

That season, Lindor posted 6.9 WAR with 33 home runs, 91 RBIs, 29 stolen bases and a .273 batting average.

With the new trio of Lindor, Semien and Juan Soto, the Mets will be hopeful to make a deep playoff run in 2026 after just falling short of the postseason in 2025.
