The New York Mets were tied with the A's early on Saturday with a chance to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning.
That's when a grounder was hit to the right of second base. It seemed set up for an obvious Marcus Semien flip to Francisco Lindor for a throw to first and the double play.
But instead, Lindor trailed behind the bag as if to field the grounder.
Semien was left to scramble, and he could only get one out, so a run came home.

The A's had already scored one run that inning, and they took a 2-1 lead on a double play that never happened.

The Mets escaped without any more runs allowed in the second, although they then gave up five in the third as the early game turned ugly.
Still, it loomed as a bizarre mistake that a defensive standout like Lindor should never make.
It's not clear whether he had the number of outs wrong, or if he thought Semien was shifted more and wouldn't be in position, or if he simply had a total brain fart.
Whatever the reason, it very likely cost the Mets a double play, and therefore a run.
Amid an odd start to the season for Lindor, this was just another play to make you shake your head.
