Former Tennessee Vol, Cowboys' project Joe Milton already impressing Brian Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a very disappointing season, one that was plagued by injuries. The loss of cornerback Trevon Diggs was especially damaging, as it occurred early in the season. The Cowboys face a tough NFC East that includes the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the rising Washington Commanders.

Dak Prescott remains the leader of the offense, but the team may have found a potential future franchise quarterback with the acquisition of Joe Milton.

“The Cowboys are adding Milton to their quarterback room in the hopes of potentially shaping the 25-year-old into a long-term starter,” Jacob Camenker and Nick Brinkerhoff wrote. “Milton's combination of NFL-level success and his overall athletic skill set made him more appealing to teams than many of the mid-round quarterback prospects in this year's draft.”

Milton served as the third-string quarterback for the Patriots last season. However, he started the final regular-season game and made the most of the opportunity.

“Milton grabbed the NFL’s attention in Week 18 of last season, when he took the majority of snaps in a largely meaningless game against the Buffalo Bills. He executed several photogenic scrambling plays, while completing 22 of 29 passes including a touchdown. Milton ran for another touchdown,” Jonathan Vankin wrote.

While Milton may not be the starter right now, he is already making a strong impression on head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

“But from the time he’s been here, the work ethic is incredible. He’s one of the first people in the building. He’s one of the last to leave. The way he’s attacked the playbook and picking it up has been incredible. And it’s been fun for me to watch Dak and Will, but really Dak take a mentorship role with Joe. The talent speaks for itself,” Schottenheimer said.

Milton will likely see limited playing time for now, but if he continues to grow under Prescott’s mentorship while refining his skills, he could develop into a top-tier quarterback for Dallas. One thing is certain: he has one of the best arms in the game.
