Former Sherrone Moore assistant lands NFL job after 8-year Michigan stint

Former Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome has accepted a position with the New York Giants as the team’s assistant offensive line coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Newsome departs Michigan Wolverines after more than a decade in the program, first as a player and later as a coach. The former Wolverine worked under Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore, becoming one of the program’s most respected young developers. The 2026 season would have marked his 12th overall year at Michigan in various roles. However, he wasn't retained as part of coach Kyle Whittingham's staff.

Before taking over the offensive line, Newsome coached tight ends from 2022-23 after serving as a student assistant with the same group in 2018-19. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line. His rise was nationally recognized when he was named to 247Sports’ Top 30 Under 30 in 2021 and the AFCA’s 35 Under 35 Class of 2023.

At Michigan, Newsome helped develop five All-Big Ten performers and was part of staffs that guided the Wolverines to consecutive Joe Moore Award wins. In 2024, the offensive line powered an attack that produced 18 rushing touchdowns, nearly a 1,000-yard rusher in Kalel Mullings, and a Mackey Award finalist in Colston Loveland.
